Urinary Coproporphyrin in Pediatric Diseases
Abstract
Total urinary coproporphyrin excretion was estimated by semiquantitative method of Benson and Chisolm in a number of pediatric diseases.
1. Normal values of 42 healthy children were found to be less than 0.1§¶ per ml. of urine (- to +). 2. Markedly increased exvretion of more than 0.5§¶ coproporphyrin/ml. (++++)was found in miliary tuberculosis, laryngeal diphtheria, measles with complicated pneumonia, encephalitis of acute stage and severe blood dyscrasia. With the recovery of the above mentioned diseases, however, the increased coproporphyrin excretion was returned to almost normal values (0.2(++)to 0.1(+)§¶/ml). Contrarily, in typhoid fever, renal diseases, measles without complication, hilar tuberculosis, and so forth showed almost mormal exvretion. 3. The findings of the associated increment in urinary coproporphyrin excretion in encephalitis of acute stage, laryngeal diphtheria, and in measles with complicated pneumonia were noted, and the possible causes for this were discussed in the light of the established porphyrin metabolism.
